Degrees in Creative Writing & Communication Studies

Our low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program is devoted not only to the education of literary artists but to community engagement and the pursuit of social justice. The program features one-on-one mentoring with a variety of successful, publishing writers and includes instruction in craft, revision, and critical reading and thinking skills. The rights and ethical responsibilities of creative writers are also addressed, along with practical career concerns related to the business of writing and publishing. The MFA program prepares adult learners for careers and meaningful lives as writers, editors, teachers, and engaged literary citizens.

Our creative writing program focuses not just on the mastery of creative writing, but on critical reading and thinking skills that foster a more exemplary understanding of language. Pairing this skill-based education with social justice and community engagement training produces a well-rounded degree that prepares adult learners for a meaningful, rewarding, and creative career. Expand your skills in written and verbal communications, broaden your understanding of social and ethical issues, and solve the problems that leaders in your profession encounter every day.

Have an MFA but no teaching experience? In a single semester, our low-residency Post-MFA Certificate program takes aspiring teachers from theory to practice, focusing on methods of teaching writing and allowing the student to gain practical classroom experience through either a face-to-face or an online supervised teaching placement. Experienced writing instructors may pursue the certificate for professional development purposes, as well as to improve their personal classroom pedagogy.

Training includes the ability to thoroughly assess, conceptualize, diagnose, and develop comprehensive treatment plans along with the skills required to deliver evidence-based, client-centered interventions with compassion and deep understanding for the complexity of addiction and recovery.

Engaging in community based work and supporting powerful organizations helps to serve diverse cultural populations. While students in this field can choose to work with a seemingly infinite number of organizations each pursuing their own unique goals, we equip you with the fundamental skills of program development and evaluation, prevention and promotion, and professional consultation and collaboration. This specialization combines traditional coursework with real-world field experience to work toward championing the community change you wish to see.

Children are inherently malleable, conforming to their surroundings and shaping perceptions without the deep consideration adults are capable of. Our approach to understanding and healing children and teens is to focus on the whole child and children’s multiple ecologies: family, peers, school, spirituality, neighborhood, and community. The Child Studies Specialization prepares you for the California MFT, while also gaining additional specialized insight into the state-of-the-art assessment, diagnosis, and effective interventions with young children, school-age children, and adolescents.

Follow your clinical interests with our less structured yet highly flexible General Practices Specialization. Deepen your knowledge and skill set by strategically assembling coursework that is reflective of your areas of interest. By designing your own syllabus, you will develop a specialization suitable for your career and life goals, while simultaneously receiving the hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that are unique to AULA. Create your own specialization and achieve the professional success you desire.

Antioch has been a pioneer in social justice for over 160 years, consistently pushing the boundaries of equality for the greater good of all marginalized groups. In the LGBT-Affirmative Psychology Specialization, you’ll develop the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and self-awareness to implement the most effective and empowering mental health services for LGBT individuals. Challenge how you understand identity and become part of a community of advocates challenging broader categories of identity and helping advance greater equality and understanding.

While always having been a core aspect of psychology practice, there is now recognition that exposure to chronic traumatic events can have a devastating effect on psychological, emotional and social well being. Traumatic events can vary in duration, intensity, and impact, but the detrimental effects on the psychological health of those affected are significant and often times debilitating. Whether it’s a result of crime, natural catastrophe or conflict related trauma, you will learn how to provide competent, sensitive and skilled therapy to those suffering.

All adults have encountered many hurdles throughout their lives while maturing with age and gaining expertise. Human development does continue through midlife, however, as new challenges present themselves and life’s burdens continue to weigh. Our Professional Clinical Counselor Specialization will empower you to use career counseling theory and career-focused assessment techniques to approach normative development across the lifespan with strategy and tact.

The Spiritual and Depth Psychology Specialization explores the intersections between mindfulness-based therapy, Jungian-based analytic psychology, and socio-cultural diversity consciousness. Students are supported in developing integrative psychotherapy techniques rooted in both traditional and evidence based practices of the East and West honoring body-mind-spirit wellness.
