Overview

Antioch’s online Individualized Studies degrees provide students the opportunity to draw on the strengths of multiple fields and engage with ideas across disciplines. Graduate students learn how to synthesize material from a variety of perspectives and how to address complex problems that cut across disciplines.

Online - Degrees in Individualized Studies

Choose a broad area of study at the beginning of your journey – Social Sciences or Humanities. Each area of focus represents a broad continent of thought and research for you to explore before diving in to a specific focus. This allows us to offer small seminars that you can use early in your programs to learn about your field as your journey is beginning, and can help you to develop a focus.

Start with three Foundations courses to learn broadly about Humanities. In the third course, you’ll work to create an individualized program that helps you achieve your personal and professional aspirations, and which will be vetted by professional scholars in your chosen fields who serve as your Mentors.

Engage with faculty, staff, and other students during three required Colloquia, which will be offered once each trimester. The Colloquia will be held through video conference using Zoom, and will broadly elaborate upon the program’s three foundations – knowledge of the field, doing research in the field, and constructing an individualized program of study. An important aspect of the Colloquia will focus on community building, and will include various speakers, introduce different faculty members, and discuss various readings in smaller disciplinary groups.

Narrative Assessment

Antioch University’s learning philosophy has always been based on individual evaluation and synthesis of what you’ve learned into demonstrated knowledge. At Antioch, we use narrative assessment, rather than letter grades, to provide a meaningful, actionable evaluation of what you’ve learned. Letter grade equivalencies for graduate school applications or employer tuition reimbursement are available upon request.

Our “no tests, no grades” philosophy appeals to some and differs from tradition for others, but we believe it accommodates people with different learning styles and better prepares you for a career in professional settings where success is often measured by presentations and written communication.
