Degrees in Counseling, Therapy & Wellness

The PhD in Counseling at Antioch University Seattle is appropriate for professional counselors who want to teach in counselor education and training programs, and/or obtain leadership positions in mental health-related agencies. With cognate areas in either Counselor Education and Supervision or Creative Arts Therapy Counselor Education and Supervision, the doctoral program in counseling at Antioch University Seattle seeks to meet the growing need for highly qualified counselor leaders—advanced counseling practitioners, counseling educators, and counseling supervisors — attracting candidates regionally as well as nationally.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program at Antioch University Seattle (AUS) awards a Master of Arts degree in Counseling with optional specialties in Art and Drama Therapy. Accredited since 2012 by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Education Programs (CACREP), the curriculum meets the highest standards in counselor training and supervision with advanced competencies in multicultural counseling, evidence based practices, and clinical competencies. At a total of 90 graduate credits, and delivered in both classroom based and hybrid formats, the CMHC program provides a structure and set of experiences to help students develop the intellectual and relational capacities needed to understand and work with others in the professional practice of counseling empowering diverse individuals, families, and groups. These goals are accomplished through a combination of required course work, electives, practical experience, and a supervised internship. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program exceeds the educational requirements for state licensure in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC), and as an accredited program, meets national curriculum standards described by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP).

The MA in Counseling degree has an Art Therapy specialization combined with Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC). You receive comprehensive clinical training, making it one of the few degree programs in the U.S. featuring art therapy with a clinical focus.

Drama therapy is one of several expressive therapies used by clinicians and practitioners to help their clients achieve emotional and physical integration, personal growth and symptom relief. Like art therapy, it is the application of a creative modality to psychotherapy. Drama therapy allows you to develop your own way of working with clients. The Antioch program is one of only a few in the country that offers a special focus in Developmental Transformations (DvT). Drama therapists work in numerous settings including, but not limited to, hospitals, residential treatment programs, schools, shelters, community centers, prisons and private practice.

The Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) Program mission are to prepare knowledgeable, skilled, self-aware, ethical, and culturally responsive clinicians for the practice of individual, couple, and family therapy.

The Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) degree has an Art Therapy specialization combined with Couple and Family Therapy (CFT). You receive comprehensive clinical training, making it one of the few degree programs in the U.S. featuring art therapy with a clinical focus.

Drama therapy is one of several creative arts therapies used by clinicians and practitioners to help their clients achieve emotional and physical integration, personal growth and symptom relief. Like art therapy, it is the application of a creative modality to psychotherapy. Drama therapy allows you to develop your own way of working with clients. The Antioch program is one of only a few in the country that offers a special focus in Developmental Transformations (DvT). Drama therapists work in numerous settings including, but not limited to, hospitals, residential treatment programs, schools, shelters, community centers, prisons and private practice. The master’s degree can be completed in three years. Students choose from Couple and Family Therapy and Clinical Mental Health Counseling coursework, integrating drama therapy as part of an additional concentration-specific training which includes internship.

The Antioch University Seattle (AUS) Bachelor of Arts in Health Counseling & Psychology (BA in HC&P) is an applied degree for current and aspiring healthcare professionals wanting to leverage their experience into a BA degree to further their careers. It also addresses how culture, geography, race, and experiences can factor into physical and psychological wellness. It is an integrated perspective, connecting biological, psychological and social processes as they relate to developing and maintaining overall wellness.

The Antioch University Seattle Addictions Studies Certificate (ASC) Program is an opportunity to learn about current approaches to treating Substance Use Disorders, effective trauma-informed interventions, and the social justice issues many clients with SUD’s and mental health issues face.

The (ASC) will not only fulfill the Washington State Department of Health education requirements for the Substance Use Disorder Alternative Learning option, but the curriculum will be based on the most recent, cutting edge theories, practices, and techniques made available by the leaders in this field.

Help meet the need for culturally informed mental health counseling practitioners to work with Latinx individuals, families, and groups. Develop a multicultural and holistic approach to counseling and psychotherapy, while gaining a deepened understanding to form your practice in serving Latinx clients and advocating for positive change on an individual and community level.

The Latinx Certificate helps professionals cultivate knowledge, awareness, and skills to work with Latinx clients and their communities. Students enrolled in the certificate can be part of the AU Latinx Social Justice Institute. The Latinx Social Justice Institute aims to improve the academic achievement and well-being of Latinx Antioch students in mental health programs, recruit and sustain Latinx students, faculty, and staff, create and empower the Latinx community within Antioch University, encourage its students, faculty, and community partners to be active members of their Latinx community, obtain on-campus leadership roles and embrace Latin America’s rich culture and history. The institute incorporates actions on seven foundational areas that are aligned with the Antiochian vision: Service, education and training, mentorship, research, global engagement, and cultural/social justice and advocacy.

Play therapy has been demonstrated to be one of the most effective therapies for children and families needing support and skills to process their life events in a safe, structured and healthy environment. Antioch University recognizes the increasing demand for play therapists in therapeutic and educational settings. Our program will provide you with the experience and skills you need for a successful career in this growing field. Association for Play Therapy (APT) accredited.

The educational philosophy of Antioch’s Sex Therapy Certificate is based on a model of adult learning that is student-centered and competency-based. The student-centered aspects of this model emphasize establishing learning environments characterized by collaboration, self-direction, and self-reflective practice.

This clinical Certificate in Sex Therapy is designed for students, alumni, and community members who hold a license to practice mental health therapy in their respective state, or who are license eligible, to broaden their clinical skills in sex therapy.

Antioch’s certificate has been developed for graduate students and post-graduate professionals to meet the minimum education credit requirements to achieve certification as a sex therapist as issued by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). Antioch University Seattle is the only accredited institution in Washington that is an approved provider of AASECT Continuing Education Credits (provider ID# 18-123-AU) Students will receive up to 200 hours of Continuing Education Credits during the course of the program. This certificate program meets the requirements for the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). Sexuality Education is a multifaceted approach to provide developmentally appropriate information about sexual health, development, and well-being. This certificate focuses on a holistic view of Sexuality Education, which combines emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and ecological values across the lifespan.

The Trauma Counseling Certificate provides five courses that provide a good foundation for mental health professionals to understand trauma and to work with clients from a trauma-informed and polyvagal-informed lens. We believe healing requires community, and learning about trauma requires community as well. Therefore, the certificate program is structured as a cohort model so that students are able to build connection, safety, care, and support when learning trauma materials.

All certificate courses are taught online (synchronous through Zoom), and we welcome graduate students and clinicians in mental health counseling or related fields to join our Trauma Counseling Certificate.

Teaching adults can be both exciting and rewarding and those who do it well understand that they need a specific set of skills to meet the needs of adult learners. In this certificate program, you will learn from faculty who are experienced in working with adult populations and who understand the most effective teaching methods to engage them. Our Adult Education certificate gives you these skills through a combination of theoretical concepts and hands-on experience. This program allows you to be mentored by skilled instructors and network with other like-minded peers. You may use your certificate towards the teaching position you’ve always imagined and also apply it toward a master’s degree.

Edible Education encompasses the entire way we think about food in schools, from wellness policies to the quality of school lunch, from the content of core curriculum to career and technical education, from school gardens to food waste recycling, and from the ecology of a school campus to our wider food community. Turn your professional experience in early childhood education into credits that count towards your associates or bachelor degree with the Reflective Practicum Certificate in Culturally Responsive Early Childhood Education. This six-month certificate program combines four courses – two focused on developing writing skills, the other two related to reflective practice skills – with earning credit for work experience learnings, also known as prior learning credits.
